City of Ashland

The City of Ashland, Oregon has partnered with BEF on several successful projects. BEF contributed about $60,000 to fund and build Solar Ashland, which encompasses the solar installations at the Civic Center, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and SOU. At the time of its construction, Solar Ashland was the largest solar plant in the Pacific Northwest. The City also received guidance from BEF to create, market and implement the Solar Pioneer program. In 2003, BEF provided funding to Ashland for the solar project at the Wilderness Charter School, which will provide on-site renewable electricity for the school and be used in hands-on academic projects. In 2011, the City of Ashland partnered with BEF once again to install a 5.17 kW system at Helman Elementary School and to deliver educational materials and training to teachers.  In 2013, the City supported a 32kW installation at the University of Southern Oregon's Stevenson Union building.

The City of Ashland installed a 63.5-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of the City Service Center covered vehicle parking structure in July 2008, after selecting a proposal from Advanced Energy Systems of Eugene, Oregon. The city offered its citizens and businesses the opportunity to purchase 20 years of output from the system via one of the first community solar project models in the country. The inspiration for Solar Pioneer II is to allow citizens and businesses of Ashland, Oregon to bring renewable energy to the community in a way that is both affordable and doesn't require home installation.

Solar Pioneer I was launched in 2000 and included the installing of a combined 30-kilowatts photovoltaic (PV) systems onto the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Administrative Building, Southern Oregon University and the City of Ashland Civic Center. Helman Elementary School

North Mountain Park Nature Center

Located in Ashland, the panels were installed on the roof of the pavilion at North Mountain Park just east of the Nature Center in October of 2005. The PV modules collect solar energy and a utility-interactive inverter converts the DC power from the PV array to AC power. The power is then synchronized with the city's electricity. SOU - Hannon Library

In August of 2000 several Pacific Northwest power concerns worked together to commission the installation of three significant photovoltaic (PV) systems in Ashland.

One of these was installed on the Southern Oregon University's Hannon Library. The 6-kilowatt PV system on Hannon Library consists of 24 solar panels connected together to send power that feeds directly into the City of Ashland's 3-phase power grid, at 220 volts AC.

SOU - Stevenson Union

In 2013, the Associated Students of Southern Oregon University installed a 31.59-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system at Stevenson Union. The power generated reduces the university's utility bills, works to displace fossil fuel-based electricity from the power grid and helps protect local air quality.
