The 3.15-kW PV system at the Hillsboro Civic Center is one of many sustainable features of the building. The City was awarded the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certificate, which also makes the structure the first “LEED Gold” city hall in the country. In addition to serving as office space, the complex serves as an educational tool by demonstrating the benefits of environmentally friendly design and renewable power. At the time of the project, energy monitoring of their PV system and system performance display at Solar4RSchools.org provided an opporunity for students to chart, graph and analyze the system’s energy data for educational purposes.
