In 2014 Southern Oregon University installed a 73.7 kW solar electric system at the McLoughlin Residence Hall and an 82.5kW system at nearby Shasta Residence Hall. These solar arrays were made possible with funding support from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. These are the fourth and fifth major solar installations at SOU, following a 32.5kW system at the Stevenson Union and 56kW at the Higher Education Center in Medford, Oregon. The power generated by these systems offsets the university's utility bills, reduces the school's carbon footprint, and helps protect local air quality.
Energy monitoring services provided to the university by Solar 4R Schools connected the live performance data from their PV system to the Energy Exploration Center at Solar4RSchools.org. Students and educators nationwide can chart, graph and analyze the system's performance data for educational purposes.
