About the School:

In February 2008, Port Townsend High School became the first Olympic Peninsula school to participate in BEF’s Solar 4R Schools program and the fifth such installation supported by Puget Sound Energy (PSE) since 2004.

As a Renewable School, Port Townsend High School is building a dedicated community of renewable energy educators, generating clean energy through their 1.02-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system and leveraging the system's performance data as an educational tool to bring energy topics to life in their classrooms. Port Townsend High School students and teachers have committed to undertaking a variety of educational endeavors, including incorporating the Solar 4R Schools classroom resources into the existing school curriculum and creating a film that documents the installation and operation of the solar array.

In 2008, educators within the school received a customized renewable energy teacher training, hands-on science kit materials to augment the school's existing curricula, and complete access to the resources available on the Solar4RSchools.org website. At the time of the project, energy monitoring provided to the school has connected students and educators to analyze the system's performance data for educational purposes. An interactive touchscreen kiosk, centrally located, allowed school visitors, parents, students and teacher to interact with live system performance data, while learning about the science and benefits of renewable energy.
