About the School:

Lyle is a small, rural school district located in the Columbia River Gorge. In 2014, BEF used funding from Bonneville Power Administration to provide a Renewable School package to Lyle Secondary School.

As a new Renewable School, Lyle High School’s teachers and students are generating clean energy with their newly installed, pole-mounted 6.36-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system. In addition, the school is utilizing live performance data from this system to generate hands-on classroom activities that educate students about renewable energy, science and engineering. Solar 4R Schools energy data monitoring system also links Lyle’s live data to the Energy Exploration Center at the Solar4RSchools.org website so that energy performance can be tracked, compared and analyzed across a broad range of BPA-served schools in the region.

Educators, students and administrators throughout the Lyle School District are building sustainability into the school’s curricula. With the new PV system and education resources from Solar 4R Schools, teachers will provide interactive, hands-on energy experiences for students that encourage energy conservation and help create the next generation of energy literate students that will play a role in creating a clean energy future.

In 2014, educators within the school received a customized renewable energy training, science kit materials and complete access to curricula and education resources on the Solar4RSchools.org website. To optimize integration of renewable energy science and technology content, every aspect of the support provided by Solar 4R Schools was customized to fit the unique focus of the school community, including topics covered in the teacher training as well as our recommendations for activities and science kit materials to make integration of this new content as efficient as possible.
