As a Renewable School, Da Vinci Arts Middle School is building a dedicated community of renewable energy educators, generating clean energy through their awarded 1.1-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system, and leveraging the system's as an educational tool to bring energy topics to life in their classrooms.
The school's PV system was strategically installed into their "living garden," a complex system of plants and microorganisms that clean the school's rain runoff and kitchen wastewater. This placement allows Da Vinci students to demonstrate several sustainable environmental practices simultaneously. The students plan to utilize this unique facility in their efforts to educate the local community about environmentally sound energy and wastewater treatment practices. To compliment their innovative environmental curriculum, in 2005 educators within Da Vinci also received hands-on science kit materials and complete access to the resources available on the Solar4RSchools.org website.
