Kirsten Woodsmith's 2008 senior project involved forming a committee of adult volunteers to install a photovoltaic (PV) system at Anacortes High School. Even after she graduated and moved on to college, her well-written grant proposal was used by the committee to pursue local funding. The Northwest Clean Air Agency provided the majority of the financial support for the PV system itself, while community members (led by Eric Shen), teachers and students carried out the design and installation process in the summer of 2009.
Following the completion of the PV system installation, the school furthered their commitment to renewable energy and renewable energy education when they joined the Solar 4R Schools program.
Renewable Classroom projects—like the one provided to Anacortes High School in 2010—are designed to build a dedicated community of renewable energy educators within a single school or district, led by a designated “Teacher Champion.” Educators within Anacortes High School received a customized renewable energy teacher training from the Solar 4R Schools team, hands-on science kit materials to augment the school's existing curricula and complete access to the teacher resources available on the Solar4RSchools.org website.
