Sky Valley Education Center (SVEC), an alternative K-12 public school, is the second largest school in the Monroe School District with 800 students (400 families) from throughout Snohomish County Washington. Their program is based on parent engagement as co-educators and offers a unique opportunity for educating both students and adults within the community. The school offers a wide range of innovative educational programs focused on technology, environmental science, and sustainability.
Staff members are well adept at creating engaging curriculum for all learners, including expertise in the scientific underpinnings of renewable energy and the important role these technologies will play in the future. SVEC has established many successful district-wide community outreach programs including annual wetland and salmon hatchery tours, a portable planetarium, student-run school clubs. The Center is also host to an annual regional robotics competition (FIRST Robotics Competition). These programs demonstrate a commitment to effective public outreach that serves many members of the larger community.
Solar 4R Schools Renewable Classroom projects are designed to build a dedicated community of renewable energy educators within a single school or district, led by a designated “Teacher Champion.” Thanks to support from Snohomish County PUD, educators within SVEC received a customized renewable energy teacher training from Solar 4R Schools, hands-on science kit materials to augment the school's existing curricula and complete access to the resources available on the Solar4RSchools.org website.
