Meet the Clean Energy Fellows
Courtney Greene
Fernan STEM Academy, Coeur d'Alene ID
Courtney has been an educator for more than 20 years, at Fernan STEM Academy, Bryan Elementary, Hayden Meadows Elementary, and Sorensen Elementary Schools, teaching all grade levels from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Courtney’s passion for inquiry has led to partnerships with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and the University of Idaho to create authentic, place-based learning experiences for her students. Her class’s latest inquiry unit was a case study of a local creek system, which had students as collaborators with the community conservation water management team led by tribal
Through a fellowship at Boise State University she worked with the Idaho State Department of Education offering teacher training in unit development based on the Next Generation Science Standards. She was able to continue this work through ISTEM professional development from the Idaho STEM Action Center. Courtney was a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2020 and currently works for Idaho Department of Education.
Laura Laumatia
Environmental Programs Coordinator, Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Plummer ID
For the entirety of her professional career, Laura has worked at various levels with youth, community, and some aspect of STEM, ranging from tropical agricultural production to looking at issues of climate change in Idaho. Her career began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Independent State of Samoa, where my first assignment was working with youth on animal husbandry. From there, Laura became a high school science teacher, first in Samoa, and then in American Samoa. She joined the American Samoa Community College staff in Agriculture Extension, and eventually became the Department Chair for our Agriculture and Natural Resources Associate Degree programs. Her work in the Samoan Islands helped her understand how critical the integration of culture and place are to supporting student success.
From Samoa, Laura returned to her home state of Idaho to work in Extension with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe in their Natural Resources Department, working on issues of water rights and water quality outreach and education. In 2016, Laura returned to school to pursue a doctoral degree through the University of Idaho in Education Curriculum and Instruction, with a dissertation centered on issues of concern to the Tribe.
Justin Marsh
College and Career Specialist, Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Plummer ID
Justin Marsh is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. His work with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe as a College and Career Specialist, focused primarily on preparing our youth for post-secondary opportunities. His 15 years of prior experience in education, ranges from Academic Advisor at Eastern Washington University to a Dual Enrollment coordinator for Spokane Community College, an Online Academic Specialist through the Community College of Spokane, and as the Johnson O’Malley Coordinator for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. Additionally, he is a member of the Idaho Indian Education Committee, and the Native American Graduation Committee; all of which focused the quality of education and the opportunities provided to Native youth in the Inland Northwest.
Stacey Martin
Adel School, Adel OR
Stacey lives and works in the rural ranching community of Adel, Oregon as the only teacher at Adel School, teaching all grades and subjects. She began her career as a classroom aide and paraeducator before completing an education degree online and becoming a certified teacher. Stacey was a 2021 Oregon Regional Teacher of the Year.
Susan Eslami
Rise Online Education, Portland OR
Susan teaches and develops curriculum for Rise Online Education, virtual K-12 school that serves students in the US and Canada. Susan strrives to facilitates learning for her students that cultivates their potential, nourishes their curiosity, and catalyzes their drive for making a positive impact on society of all living things. Through her classes, she hopes they are able to come away with a passion for exploration, a drive for analysis, an openness towards different perspectives, as well as failure.
Rebecca Morris
La Center High School, La Center WA
Rebecca has been teaching for 28 years and has been in the La Center School District for 21 years. She teaches an Environmental Studies course with three primary strands: gardening and land use, water monitoring and watersheds, and waste reduction. The class is part of the Clark County Water Monitoring Network, with connections to Fish First and salmon recovery. The gardening portion of her three-hour environmental studies class features a student-created garden at La Center High School, rainwater harvesting and land management. For the water monitoring portion of Rebecca’s class, her class heads out to the wetlands three times a month to learn about water quality testing and watershed activities. Rebecca received the Green Apple Award from Clark County for her dedication to the environment. Rebecca and her students led the efforts that won La Center High School a national Green Ribbon School Award for their garden and sustainability programs.
