About the School:

As a Solar 4R Schools Renewable School, Orcas Montessori School on Orcas Island, Washington is building a dedicated community of renewable energy educators and generating clean energy with the installation of a new 9.72-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system. This system will reduce energy costs for the school and will provide a valuable interactive energy education resource for teachers and students.

In 2013, educators within the school received a custom package of renewable energy teacher training, hands-on science kit materials and complete access to the wealth of educational resources and curricula available on the Solar4RSchools.org website. Solar 4R Schools worked with educators at Orcas Island Montessori to create a custom package of materials and content to serve the unique educational needs of the school. This included recommendations for activities and specific science kit materials designed to integrate renewable energy education seamlessly into existing school curricula.

As with all new Renewable School projects, live energy monitoring and data display from the Orcas Montessori School’s PV system are now contained on the Energy Exploration Center at Solar4RSchools.org. This allows schools nationwide to use this PV system to advance renewable energy education.
