The photovoltaic (PV) system installed at Elmonica Elementary School is one of three similar PV systems installed on Beaverton School District (BSD) school buildings in 2011. These projects are a public-private partnership that combines private energy investor funding and the donated roof space from each school. The partnership provides BSD with free solar power generated by the PV systems for 15 years, saving the District about $30,000.00 each year in electricity costs. The system installed on the Beaverton Health and Science School roof is rated to produce about 100,000 kilowatt-hours of... Read full project narrative >>

The wind turbine project at Skyline School represents the first time the school will be able to generate electricity for its own use. The raising of the wind turbine is also a first for Portland Public Schools. The turbine installation culminated in a renewable energy education event led by the Solar 4R Schools team, Skyline School teachers and volunteers. Students broke into teams to build and test their own wind turbines and measured the impact of blade size, shape and rotation. A slide presentation on solar and wind generation was also viewed during student assemblies that day. The... Read full project narrative >>

The Griffin School District Solar Project was developed in collaboration with South Sound Solar, Inc., BEF and Puget Sound Energy. The project included the installation of a 2-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system onto Griffin Elementary School in Olympia, Washington. The six REC 215 panels feed a PV-powered 1,100-Watt inverter that synchronizes with the three phase commercial power that feeds the school. The unique structure uses the panels themselves as the roof, and the surrounding landscape allows for easy access to the system.

In addition to building a dedicated community of... Read full project narrative >>
